Given the bossy mannerisms of US and EU, the WTO provisions are proving nightmarish for the smaller nations. The adage that ’small fishes are engulfed by the big fishes’ has been amply demonstrated by the provisions, supposed to bring uniformity in the trade practices. In this scenario, the smaller countries are bound to shift to ‘protectionism’ from ‘multilateralism’. Unless provisions are introduced to fix the accountability of the big players towards the ‘intent’ inherent in the WTO’s guidelines and subsequently punished for its breach, there is hardly any merit in hoping for better days, for elimination of contradictions via meetings.

The hectic lobbying which takes place before such meetings unambiguously reveal that nation are more interested in protecting their petty gains than thinking of global expansion of WTO’s vision. Well, it’s time for WTO to ensure that the major nations don’t come to run a parallel body to protect their interests.
