Rich Killing Unborn In Punjab

The cases of female foeticide in affluent families of the Punjab’s villages is a slap on the face of those who believe that wealthy homes are embodiments of lofty social values. In fact, in modern times they are mirror up to dark realities of human life.

Anyway, one expects Punjab, one of the wealthiest states in country, to set up healthy precedents in providing women a better platform in social arena.

One of the shortest way as damage control measure would be to rope in NGOs to make women aware of their legal rights in this regards. Better village Pachayats come forward to tackle this issue on war footing. Or else, it will be hard to dispel this stigma from the face of state, representative of great Indian tales of phenomenal success.

It’s high time these people realize the cons of female foeticide. Numerous NGOs and Govt. itself for that matter, have tried rigorously to get the fact of the matter across to these narrow minded people, but they have neglected it outright, fearless in their endeavors. It may sound harsh and inhumane - but such people should be hanged.

Thanks for unleashing your thoughts on this very sensitive issue.Earlier I thought that female foeticide is the result of poverty. May be their poverty act as a curse for their female child. However, the mindset of rich parents in Punjab has forced me to rethink. It’s really hard to believe that they can go this extent. It’s also very difficult to understand why they have refused to acknowledge that women in our times are setting new standards of excellence?

They are called ’Kudi Maars’ in Punjabi.Coming from the state I know a couple of them personally who have given in to this hideous crime. The state’s wealth has galloped high but its thinking remains fixed in the stinking medieval ditch. Amrita Pritam, the famous Punjabi poetess was right in imploring Waris Shah to rise from his grave and pen down an ode in tribute to the unborn daughters of the land of five rivers, ’the Panj-ab’

The ”Kudi Maars” should realize that there may come a time when there will be no girls left for marrying with their prize possession- sons !!

A verse from poem of Amrita Preetam :

Jaane khuda ki raaton ko kya hua,
Vo andhere mein daud-ti aur bhaagti
neend ka jugnu pakadne lagi...

Sunaar ne dil ki angoothi tarash di
Aur meri takdeer us mein
Dard ka moti jadne lagi..

Aur jab duniya ne sooli gaad di,
to har mansoor ki ankhein
Apna mukkaddar padne lagi..

It’s very difficult to forget Amrita, isn’t it ?

It’s all because of the Indian psyche. Its roots are deep in religion, dogmas and stinking shibboleths followed in Indian society. It makes a sense, though little, if the poor and uneducated people are doing so, however, if the rich and educated people do the same they are more ghastly than their uneducated counterparts. Perhaps it will take little too longer for this abhorred thinking to end…. I pray for common sense to prevail soon.

Received your vies after a very long time. Thanks for spending your precious moment.

Yes, if rich and educated start chasing animal instincts,it would be really very hard to uphold cherished values in our society. The shocking thing about the whole affair is that people from lower strata of society always look forward to elite class for better precedents .However,if they start chasing wrong ideals,it would be very difficult to restore values in lower sections of society.

If king is corrupt, how can you expect the subordinates to be follower of principles ?

The killing of women exists in various forms in societies the world over. However, Indian society displays some unique and particularly brutal versions, such as dowry deaths and sati. Female foeticide is an extreme manifestation of violence against women. Female foetuses are selectively aborted after pre-natal sex determination, thus avoiding the birth of girls. As a result of selective abortion, between 35 and 40 million girls and women are missing from the Indian population. In some parts of the country, the sex ratio of girls to boys has dropped to less than 800:1,000. The United Nations has expressed serious concern about the situation.

The sex ratio has altered consistently in favour of boys since the beginning of the 20th century , and the effect has been most pronounced in the states of Punjab, Haryana and Delhi. It was in these states that private foetal sex determination clinics were first established and the practice of selective abortion became popular from the late 1970s. Worryingly, the trend is far stronger in urban rather than rural areas, and among literate rather than illiterate women, exploding the myth that growing affluence and spread of basic education alone will result in the erosion of gender bias.

The sati system has now become a thing of past. The dowry deaths are still very common. However, the strict laws and growing consciousness among modern guys and gals,in my eyes ,are going to limit the dowry deaths as well. The dowry system has been part of Indian culture but than in ancient times its form was quite different than its deteriorated form in our times. It’s our greed that has turned this practice into a life-threatening affair. One thing more dowry deaths are possible only with the overt/covert role of other women around the bride !

It’s also very strange that literates, belonging to rich families, are to encouraging female foeticide.

May be by aborting these female babies, its saved them from a life of misery and discrimination - so now these precious boys that were allowed to live will just have to turn gay as there won’t be enough girls around for them to marry!
They can blame their stupid parents.

Once MOIA minister Mr Vayalar Ravi said, when he came to USA, that there are about 20000 complaints from Punjab alone for NRI husbands deserting wives. But the RTI reports showed only less than 30 complaints!!! That leads to my genuine doubt about the credibility of this report.
