It’s very clear that standards set by the previous movie makers in relation to songs and dialogues have gone down to an all-time low. Some of the recent chart busters come to put a seal of approval on my opinion. I wonder what could be the real reason. Some of the lyrics writer like Prasoon Joshi, Neelesh Mishra and others do have some talent within them but I feel that being involved in too many projects at the same time they are not able to do justice with their poetic instincts.
So most of them time we find fast beats are synchronized with meaningless strings of words and that’s how a popular chart buster comes into origin .The most funny thing about new songs is that most of them have in background the same meaningless phrases in English. This trend pattern indicates two things. First, the song-making is now more westernized. Second, nearly all the songs are being prepared keeping in mind the hip hop generation.
This in turn is enough indication of the fact that song creation is now not for our ears but for minting money by targeting certain age-groups. If you look at the songs of the most popular song writer of the film industry Sameer, you will easily come to intercept what I am trying to say. This gentleman has turned out to be “ Factory ” of stupid songs – a mass manufacturer of songs devoid of meaning.
You listen to any of his song and you will find : Nazar, Jigar, Jaaneman, Dhadkan, Tadpan, Saansoen Mein etc. keep appearing all the time. He has made some bogus changes by trying to rope in some Urdu words, which produce little impact because he doesn’t know at all how to write meaningful songs in a simple manner.
Shailendra never used complex phrases but still managed to coin some of the most soulful numbers like ‘Aaja Re Pardesi ’ from Madhumati. Whatever talent Sameer was equipped with he seems to have utilized it in movies like Aashiqui, Dil Hai Ke Manata Nahi, Sadak and Saajan. Since the taste of people has fallen and industry too is devoid of talents, there is no other option for the movie-makers other than flogging the dead horse like Sameer .
However, song writers like Sayeed Quadari, Praveen Bhardwaj, Dev Kohli and Sudhakar Sharma, to name a few, and yes, a real gem like Gulzar have tried to be waves of fresh air but flow of Bakwaas songs is making the life of music lovers hellish. The poetic beauty inherent in the inherent in the lines penned by Gulzar touches our heart.
Look at this line: Hawaoen Pe Likh Do Hawaoen Ka Naam. His surrealism knows no limits and I am surprised at his ability to introduce this surrealism in such a free flowing manner without crippling the structure of the songs. But I am really unhappy the way so-called inspired songs have replaced the haunting melodies of yesteryears. Surprisingly, some are not ashamed in calling these songs to be by-product of inspiration. It appears that they are not even good in copying. From movies to songs everything seem to be inspired and that’s why I feel the most fitting place for all of them is dustbin of our minds.
Touching the sense of music of our present times composers I feel too much dependence on technology have made them incapable of infusing melody in their compositions. Even A.R. Rahman songs seems to be suffering from over usage of technology. His songs, being devoid of melody, appear to be pieces of different sounds arranged in a mechanical way.
Though he occasionally comes up with one or two melodious songs –like Kabhi-2 Aditi Zindagi – but most of the times he is a pale shadow of his former self. His ‘Roja “days are now over. Pritam and Ehsaan Shankar Loy are giving good music but they too are victim of their limitations and are often carried away by the charm of Western beats.
The electronic instruments often produce noise instead of giving rise to rhythm and melody in the creations. When these limitations of musical instruments get coupled with the limitations of singers and the composers one is bound to hear one night songs.
For instance just compare the melody level of song “ Ye Mera Dil Yaar Ka Diwana ” after listening to the original and its latest appearance in Don’s remake. You will definitely feel the difference - the difference created by the application of unnecessary strange beats of strange instruments in the modern version.
Lastly, let me say a word about the kinds of dialogues employed by the movie-makers. Gone are the days when dialogues of Dr. Rahi Masoom Raza, Rajinder Krishna, Rajinder Singh Bedi and Saleem Javed, to name a few, forced to sit up and take notice of the meaning echoed by the dialogues.
I do not want to extend this topic. However; I wish to narrate a incident, courtesy 93.5 SFM , which says all. One gentleman decided to enjoy the movie in a theater with his girlfriend. Both were young and were apparently visiting the theater for first time (I mean together). Unfortunately, they couldn’t avail the tickets of movie of their choice since they failed to arrive in time at the selected theater. Instead of returning back with air of rejection writ large on their faces, they decided to enjoy another recent arrival “ ShootOut At Lokhandwala ”.
I have not seen the movie but as per the boy’s version the movie had some nasty dialogues. Since the girl was quite young and was to some extent unfamiliar with these hot favorite dialogues of our times all of a sudden in the midst of movie she dared to inquire about the meaning of these ugly phrases. The girl tried best to be in whispering mode but however her innocent inquiry got leaked to others sitting there. Naturally, this gave way to many sessions of huge laughter. Both of them turned into objects of laughter.
I have too come across such movies but luckily I have been watching them all alone. Anyone who has watched “Kaante” produced and directed by Sanajy Gupta would definitely feel the heat of such ugly dialogues. “Teri To Phat Padi ” or “ Teri To Nikal Padi ” etc. I am mentioning this aspect of film making only because such a language sooner or later becomes part of the conversation of present age youths. We have to be conscious of the standards we are setting for the generations to come.
Lastly, like to end the article by intercepting some of the chart busters in a lighter vein. Just want to highlight how meaningless these songs are but still they are hot favorites among the present day youths.
1. Tak Tana Nana Tandoori Nights; Movie : Karz - It appears to be the promotional song of some Dhabewaala.
2. Pappu Can’t Dance Sala ; Movie: Jaane Tu Yaa Jaane Na - OK Pappu can’t dance but is that enough to turn him into butt of ridicule ? Many of us cannot dance .Does that mean we all are fit to be passed off as Pappus?
3. Main Talli Ho Gayi; Movie: Ugly Aur Pagli - What’s the point in making it known to others? Go home, change the dress and sleep to get above the Talli Effect.
4. Hoore Badmash Launde; Movie :Heroes –What’s the point in entertaining these bad guys ? It appears baddies are now the role models of present times .
