INTERCEPTING GANDHI’S FAMILY LIFE

ARVIND K.PANDEY

It would be interesting to watch an iconic father’s clash with his rebellious son on the silver screen . One wonders whether the movie would be able to succcesfully potray the complex relationship which existed between Gandhi and Harilal , wishing to live life on his own terms . It remains to be seen whether ” Gandhi My Father ” is able to strike a chord with viwers like Richard Attenborough’s ” Gandhi ” . Coming to the the theme of the movie ,I wish to state that a revolutionary spirit has no personal life .It was but natural for Gandhi to remain oblivious of personal obligations centred around his home life or , for that matter , not able to do justice with the expectations of sons . On the other hand , one needs to place the sentiments of Harilal in right perspective , who refused to be bogged down by the towering persona of Gandhi .One needs to appreciate the upcoming director Foroz Khan for tackling such a sensitive theme in his very first directorial venture . Let’s hope this movie dosen’t turn out to be another clitched depiction , aimed at mere titilation , of a serious subject . If that takes place then I must say this would be nothing short of making mockery of Gandhi’s personal life .

You’re right in saying that a revolutionary has no personal life. It’s like being married to your cause, or making the cause you champion like a family.

Dear Grace B ,

Yes , you have rightly pointed out that a genius pays the price for displaying excellence .Gandhi,Marx, Lord Krishna etc. all had to suffer for their cause .They had no family life .It’s not an easy task to enterain personal desires when you are a public figure . Even Indira Gandhi had to maintain a safe distance between herself and her husband to provide oxygen to her political career.
Interestingly , modern parents , whether its male or female , are ignoring family life for their petty intersts . Feminism has given rise to new women who don’t find it wrong to sacrifice the interests of their families at the altar of their insignificant concerns .Hats off for such progressive so-called liberated men and women !!

Maybe that’s because there are many less significant things that distract people from pursuing the real causes in this world. There are a few gigantic things that we have to fight for and champion. Sadly, there are many distractions in this impoverished material world.

Dear Grace ,

True, we are living in world that has developed bonds with lessser things . But that does not mean we should stop striving for greater things . Or for that matter turn out to be cause of worry for others like George Bush and Al-queda !!!
