India :

It’s time to shatter the myth that present age movie-makers are providing new heights to Indian cinema. The harsh truth is that it has been catering to elitist section of the society , who constitute very small portion of the Indian society. It’s amazing that our movie-makers are hell –bent on imposing taste and aspirations of this class on masses guided by altogether different set of perceptions. Precisely, this is the reason why creations of hi-tech directors fail to strike chord with commoners. Although our industry boasts of churning out maximum movies in a year, there is nothing for the conscious viewers to identify himself with, being devoid of both substance and elegance. Unless the directors stop taking into consideration global market as the supreme guiding element, the situation won’t improve. Yesteryear saw plethora of directors like Guru Dutt,Raj Kapoor,Bimal roy,Subodh Mukherji and etc. who were in sync with psyche of Indian people. They reflected the minds and hearts of ‘aam aadmi’(common people) across the silver screen with rare sensitivity.Today they are bogged down by ’star appeal’ weaving trash one after another with Shahrukh or Aishwarya instead of coming out with quality production with Tabu or Naseeruddin Shah.True, it’s market which is determining the process of movie making instead of issues hovering the mass. Interestingly, regional movie-makers are still down –to-earth when it comes to selection of themes although they lack better equipments. In nutshell, for actual transformation of Indian cinema we need more people like Mani Ratnam or else the so-called Bollywood take-offs would keep on weaving illusions in the name of exploring reality.

Very true. But in today’s world, the only thing the the movie-makers decide prior to even having the script is the amount of returns that their film would churn out from us. And when this is decided upfront, they go in for the story, then star-cast and so on.

Dear Kumar ,

Thanks for your comment. It’s really shocking that likes of Amitabh Bachchan believe that our directors cannot afford to be at par with those in West since it goes against the taste of Indian viewers . This means that we have to remain captive to movies devoid of content offered to us in the name creativity ...

Arvind I do not agree with you. Indian society is in a state of flux...even the so-called aam admi is very different from what they were in Guru Dutt’s era. Movies to a very large extent mirror the society as it is.

Dear Nishi ,

No I am not trying to suggest that movie makers should churn out one classic after another .What I atrying to covey is that our directors should stop offering trash in the name of creativity . It’s hard to believe that actors are charging more than a crore per movie for their stupid acts on screen . Ironically , all this is happening in the name of creativity . Sex and ” Maramaari ” that’s all our movies have to offer to us .Let’s not forget that movie making is art and one has no right to waste the precious time of the viewrs .One needs to watch the flicks made by the French and Iranians which are so close to the real life and that too in limited budget ....

As Nishi said, movies are a mirror to the society. But I don’t mean that Bollywood is churning out classics. In fact it gives me immense pain to even think of the stupidity and banality of those films. The fact is that even the people have somehow developed a taste for such stuff and experimental and novel attempts like Black Friday meet with cold shoulders. Not to talk about regional arthouse cinema!

Dear Jitaditya ,

True if we don’t have to offer anything good in the name of movie making than our directors should stop boasting about creative appeal of their movies .What Raghuvir Yadav said some years ago has not lost its relevance even tody . He remarked that you can’t expect these so-called ” movie stars ” to give good performance . These sons and daughters of earlier superstars who have no connection with real life can never do justice to their roles . Indeed , it,s time to say ” Crazy Kiya Re ” ..

Also those who govern the industry, i.e. the censor board and the relevant ministry, are full of people with no cinematic taste. Censor board will strive hard to cut realistic movies ban anything that goes against the convention. Also when films like Jeans, Devdas and Eklavya are sent as official Oscar entries, we know that we are never going to win!
