Encircling Indian Movie Landscape

Let me state that new flicks have failed to highlight the core -issues hell -bent on crushing the hearts and minds of the urban youth. The sincerity and honesty of yesteryear movie makers , who dealt with social issues tearing apart our social fabric in all their dimensions cannot be traced in Gen Next directors.Though flicks like Yuva,Hum Tum,Dil Chata Hai,Gulaal,Shool,A Wednesday,Dev D and Rang De Basanti have tried to make inroads into the lives of urban youths ,one, however, cannot safely conclude that better days are here for people interested in quality cinema.

Let’s not forget that present age young directors are solely focused on minuscule section, especially the hip-hop elite class, and that too with aim to carve a niche among the NRIs.After all , movie making is all about attracting huge moolah ! Since the directors are totally cut-off from the dilemmas encircling the rural and middle class Indians, they fail to stir the emotions of average Indians. If flicks like Amanush,Aandhi,Do Bigha Jameen ,Pyaasa and Mother India were able to leave an indelible impression on the consciousness of the viewers,it’s because their makers shared the road with masses.

Can present age directors claim to be owner of such simplistic and down -to-earth approach? No.In the same breath, let me state that film making in India is today devoid of Indianness.Right from creation of songs to portrayal of emotions, the Westernized treatment of caricatured plots has taken over the sense and sensibilities of the movie barons.Let’s appreciate the Western attributes but,in the process make room for Indian beliefs and perceptions .

Indian cinema has lost its track. It’s no more an instrument of social awakening.

@Lalit

Indian cinema has concentrated it’s firepower in awakening the business tycoons...hahaha

It’s purely now intended at making money abroad. That’s why in every second movie released you will find a NRI searching for the roots!!!

Nothing has lost the track. Its a wind of change which is very natural. Things change with time and nothing remain constant otherwise we still would have been apes.

Thanks for leaving a comment.

Yes,change can neither be stopped nor overlooked. But to make movies on absurd themes in name of honoring the changes is totally unacceptable.

Anyway,it appears it’s time to worship ”wrong” more than ”right”.Honouring wrong patterns is the hallmark of present era.

A line from Kaifi Aazmi’s song in Anupama:

”Manga Hua Tum Kuch De Na Sake, Jo Tumne Diya Wo Sahne Do.”

The line of this song says all.

Present day producers and directors have dearth of ideas. That’s why they make movies revolving around love and romance. Any bodies who have worked on different idea have got success.

Paisa is the only Mai Baap of Indian producers and directors. For Indian movie goers any movie devoid of ”Naach Gana”, ”Maar Dhaad” and ”Latka-Jhatkas” is a ”Jhandu” or ”Bakwaas” movie.

Amitbah sounds right that we are not made for complex themes appreciated by the Western viewers.

Earlier love and romance acted as catalyst in movies related with socio-economic themes. However, in our times, love and romance is being portrayed for all wrong purposes.

Still there are people who try to fulfill there social obligations. I really admire Nandita Das for her movies. Don’t miss the “Firaq”. It’s a nice movie based on Gujarat riots.

The filmmakers like Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra ,Shyam Benegal,Anurag Kashyap and Mohit Suri are doing a good job in present times.

However, I miss the likes of Raj Kapoor, Guru Dutt,Bimal Roy,Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Bhattacharya.

It’s an era of chocolaty heroes. Who would like to see the angry young man of Deewar raising his voice against injustice?

In other words, times have changed. The heroin of yesteryear used to say : ”Aao Huzoor Tumko Sitaro Pe Le Chalu ”

Now she says : ”Tera dola jo imaan tu saala kaam se gaya”..hahaha

Have you people really closed your mind or what????

Every rose has thorns. See its your view if you wanna see the roses or the thorns in it.

According to me, these days directors are doing amazing job by directing movies that are directly related to today's life style and the truth basically.

Earth 1947, Parzania, Page 3, Corporate, Firaq, A Wednesday, Black Friday, Tare Zameen Par and many more in the list are the beautiful movies with social messages and deals with our day to day reality.

It depends on you if you go and watch crap like 'Kabhi Alvida Na kehna' or a movie with a message.

Thanks for visiting the page.

Thorn is also a reality.isn’t it ? A positive perception alone is not going to remove the dark realities of our times.

I have also stated that there are some directors who are doing a great job by exposing the contradictions that exist in our society.

But just tell me how many have watched these movies?

However, i still feel that movie makers of past era were much more close to ordinary citizens. They were simple and worked on the themes close to the heart of the viewers. On the contrary, today’s movie makers, the right one’s, are bit complex and deal in themes with which hoi polloi is totally unaware of.I mean common man cannot identify themselves with these movies. There is some reality in these movies but that’s not a reality for all the people.

Some movies are now being made only for getting some recognitions at International film festivals. They are horribly dark. For instance Deepa Mehta’s ”Fire”? What’s the message of that movie for common man? Is the reality shown in that movie has to do anything with problems encircling the common man ? Yes,FIRE is a good movie. But for whom ?

I do agree that when life has become complex, the movie directors-the real ones-too have to become complex in their approach. However,we can be simple in our presentations while retaining the complexity of the themes.

The one director that has brilliantly mixed complex themes with popular elements is Shekhar Kapoor. His ”Bandit Queen’” and ”Masoom” have set new milestones.

Otherwise, most of the directors are using symbols, technique and language that’s not being followed by the common man.

My objection is that most of the movies made are revolving around the elite section and their problems.
