Arun Shourie's View On Reservation

In spite of the commendable achievements of Arun Shourie,it’s disturbing that he is viewed as a “communalist” by so-called progressive thinkers !He has helped not only to understand the copmlex political issues in all their shades -be it Mandal dilemma or tirade against appeasement of minorities- but also placed them in right perspective .

Arun Shourie's View On Reservation

‘Falling Over Backwards ” by Arun Shourie is an attempt to put the records straight by making it clear that reservation in absence of creation of jobs would only lead to mayhem.Unfortunately ,the ambiguous nature of affirmative action (AA)has come to mean progress at cost of marginalization of vast section of society.In fact,reservation has become an effective medium to enlarge the vote-bank.Nobody is against the rise of lower section of the society,however,it should not mean subverting the principles of Constitution in a blatant manner,much less weakening the pillars of social world .

Mr. Arvind, I agree with Arun Shourie and he is the guts to say the truth in public. Many ’psuedo-secularist’ try to talk in private. I also agree with your views.

My question to supporting reservation whether reservation promote honesty and dignity of the citizen. Look at the Police Department and Municipal services in the country. There is large representation of SC, ST, OBC representation. If anybody like it or not it is the most corrupt departments in the country. Why so?

Why the reservationist not talking about promoting their skill, honesty, merit etc. How long can we continue with the reservation when globalisation taking place. Product and services getting much competition from other countries. Can the reservation solve the problem.

Such worn out policies serve the vested interested of worn out politicians.Reservation has created so many problems instead of elevating the status of underprivileged !!

Wipro chairman Mr. Ajim Prem ji's comment on reservation:

I think we should have job reservations in all the fields. I completely support the PM and all the politicians for promoting this. Let's start the reservation with our cricket team. We should have 10 percent reservation for muslims. 30 percent for OBC, SC/ST like that. Cricket rules should be modified accordingly. The boundary circle should be reduced for an SC/ST player. The four hit by an OBC player should be considered as a six and a six hit by a OBC player should be counted as 8 runs . An OBC player scoring 60 runs should be declared as a century . We should influence ICC and make rules so that the pace bowlers like Shoaib Akhtar should not bowl fast balls to our OBC player. Bowlers should bowl maximum speed of 80 kilometer per hour to an OBC player . Any delivery above this speed should be made illegal. Also we should have reservation in Olympics. In the 100 meters race, an OBC player should be given a gold medal if he runs 80 meters.

Really amusing. That is why we are lag behind with other countries. That is why the ’slumdog millionnaire’ like picture get more attention. If Tatas, Infosys and other companies tell if their product and service is getting bad, can the Govt. of India take responsibility?

This is the important reason to increase corruption and violence in the society. If the patient want to get diagnosed for his illness, he definitely go to the Good doctor. Again quota compel the patient to know the doctors surname, caste etc. because they are playing with their life.

Even Ambedkar told the country to review the quota policy in the long run. In this quota process, the son of politician, bureaucrats, contractors, criminals and other big individuals belong to SC, ST, OBC getting the real benefit. The poor remains the poor only. It is a blatant political opportunism. If you look at the political representation in India, majority belongs to SC, ST, OBC. What happens then - corruption and violence in the society.

We are not lagging behind the other countries due to reservation. It's a false propaganda. There are other sectors responsible for this.

These are the silly arguments of Mr. Ajim Premji against the reservation. Reservation was meant for improving the lives of people belonging to SC/ST category. But people of these categories are still deprived. Caste discrimination still exists.

Only then the actual purpose of the reservation will be fulfilled. Currently they are using it merely to gain votes and apply where comfortable.

It’s not too difficult to intercept the real meaning of Ajim Premji’s words !!

Reservation policies are making survival of the incompetent a norm in our country !!

Why ?

”Currently they are using it merely to gain votes and apply where comfortable.”

The vote bank considerations have killed the real purpose of reservation policy.

reservation per se helps only a very thin slice of the so called underprivilged. i have seen three generations of the same family getting the benefit of reservation. for example the cji belongs to sc. should his children get the benefits of reservation. there is no logic in there getting the benefit of reservation.

@Hiten

You sound correct.In changed times of ours,it’s time to frame new policies that allows rise of students on basis of merit.Let all bright students-especially belonging to weaker sections-be ensured a better future.

In nutshell,it’s time to secure a better future for all the children instead of pursuing flawed policies that are making bright students victim of psychological disorders .

i have seen in most of the premium colleges ,where the sc/st students get admission on quota(now will add women to this), take ages to clear the final examinations.taking seven years for a five year course wd be average.they just dont work hard as they are assured of a job, because of quota.

@Hiten

Thanks God we have an efficient judicial system or else corrupt politicians would have ensured that only quota system is going to prevail!!

That’s why some feel that to be born as SC/ST in our times is a ticket to life of comfort.

only individuals gain through reservation, not the community they represent. will a poor brahmin priest in a far away village in the interiors of hindi heartland empathise with the achievements of a brahmin professional, and be satisfied in the knowledge that his community is in fact 'over' represented in elite professions? or will the scheduled caste cobbler in the village be any better off with his cousin four times removed, son of a reserved category ias officer, becoming an iit engineer?

all these talks of benefits of 'diversity' look politically motivated and artificial to me in the indian context.

we Indians are the losers.. i never liked intelligent people to go out of India and settle down out side. but the reservation issue is clearly telling them to get out ......this place is for reserved people only...patriotic people would now look at the foolishness and tell the merit oriented candidates go to US or Europe...earn money and support the cause of your patriotism form there. the country here is now focused on social reservations and not on supporting the merited.

I agree completely Julie.

Talent is never appreciated in India. What is appreciated is money in the pocket or the political back that you can show. Rest is waste. I have seen people with graduate or a post graduate degrees, working as class 4 employees in the govt offices. Really feel sad for them.

We are sick and tired of the corruption that we have to face at every step in this country. Reservation is another form of it.

Thanks to both Julie and Sanwali for their valuable input.

Needless to state that our dependence on reservation policies has sounded death knell for students relying on merit.It’s really strange that polices introduced with good intent ultimately come to ensure new means of corruption.It’s not surprising that the proposed Women’s Reservation Bill may further worsen the situation !!

It is futile to have quotas for others who have it now. It is time to have time-bound programme to remove quota wherever it exists. There should be affirmative action only wherever it is needed. Sonia Gandhi has rightly said today that people have discarded caste and communal politics. Why should politicians stick to it? Emphasis should be for generating more opportunities quickly for people, be it in jobs or education. There are plenty of talented people in India who do not get opportunity, irrespective caste, gender or religion.

Reservation...does it really help someone to grow if they not willing to? After sixty years of independence, we are still struggling for basic needs & these politicians have made reservation their vote tool. This reservation is helping us to grow but its not enough so what the need of it. Why don’t we just deny it & think with a better prospective. We should stop thinking on the basis of Cast, Creed, Language, Region .......& why don’t we think like an Indian, who just believe in India, a better, strong & developed India.
1 Stars
@Aditya

A strong and developed India can never be the reality in the wake of such flawed policies.

Reservations are to be based on one’s economic status, not caste by birth.
Just like in the US, those with income of something like below $5000 are given free schooling from the government. That is something that makes sense. Denmark gives free education. Sweden gives money to parents so as to make them able to put their children in better schools of their choice.

Reforms, not reservations in the education sector are required.

You are right....india should learn from such policies and implement them here as well. What is the use of giving reservation to the rich SC/ST? Logic should be applied before making laws.
